Ada Lovelace Day: I missed it, but don’t care.
In honour of Ada Lovelace Day, I’m here to write about the women in technology who have influenced me. Coming from a technical writing background, many of my mentors and role models have been women (since this seems to be a female-dominated field). Let me start at the beginning.
Eilan Jung
As my first technical writing manager, she taught me a lot not only about technical writing but about being professional and how to achieve what I want. She was also one of my first friends when I moved to Canada and helped me feel at home.
Rahel Bailie
As a mentor of mine, she also showed me how to go out and get what I want. This woman seems to have an unlimited amount of energy. Just hearing about all her activities makes me tired! But when I feel low, I think of Rahel’s motivation and keep her as an example of how to excel. Her website: www.intentionaldesign.ca
Elizabeth Randolph
Eliazbeth was my Information Architecture Institute mentor for about 2 years. She taught me a lot about learning the basics, covering all my bases, advocating for the user, dealing with difficult customers. We finally met at the IA Summit last year. It was so great to meet someone who helped me so far along my path. Her website: www.betterexperience.com
Odile Morrison
I volunteered with Odile in the STC. She was the president and I the vice-president. Not only did I learn a lot about how to be a chapter president, but I also found Odile encouraging and inviting. She was always honest without being rude (a skill I needed to develop!). She was always learning new technologies and expanding her skill set.
